Why move your blog to WordPress?
There are many great reasons to choose WordPress over other blogging platforms. Here are some of the best ones:
Gain full control with WordPress
WordPress was founded to make blogging better and easier. Today, WordPress is used for much more, but its blogging roots are still apparent. With WordPress, it is easy to start blogging, and unlike other blogging services, WordPress offers total freedom and flexibility. Your blog can look and function exactly as you want. There are no limitations with WordPress, and you’ll get full control.
High performance
With WordPress, you can choose a web host that delivers high performance for your blog. This gives your readers a better experience, keeping them on your website longer and encouraging them to read more.
A fast website is also appreciated by Google and can make you more visible in search results. Continue reading this article for tips on how to ensure your blog is both fast and search engine optimised!
Starting your WordPress blog
Before starting your migration, it is important to create a WordPress blog to move to. Even though WordPress has far more features than other blogging services, it is still easy to get started with a WordPress website. With a one-click installation, we do the work for you. You only need to choose a domain, a hosting package, and start the installation. It takes no more than 5-10 minutes.
Blogging features are pre-installed in WordPress. After installation, you can choose a good free WordPress theme specifically tailored to make your blog look extra stylish.
If you want a more maintenance-free blog, we recommend Managed WordPress. This way, you don’t have to manage updates yourself. They are installed automatically and checked regularly to ensure everything works as it should. Additionally, we perform security checks on your blog so you can feel confident.
Moving from Blogger to WordPress
WordPress has excellent tools for migrating a blog from Blogger to WordPress. The support is great since Blogger is the most globally popular blogging platform.
This doesn’t mean the process is entirely simple, but it allows for a rather complete migration and minimises potential SEO issues.
Export från Blogger
We’ll start by exporting all blog posts from Blogger. It’s simple:
- Log in to Blogger.
- Scroll down to Manage Blog and click Backup Content.
- Click Download.
Now, you have a copy of your blog. This file can be used either to restore your blog in Blogger or to move it to WordPress.
Import to WordPress
Now that you have your file from Blogger, we will import all posts into WordPress.
- Log in to WordPress.
- Click Tools in the sidebar and select Import.
- Click Install Now under Blogger.
- Wait for the installation, then click Run Importer.
- Click Choose File.
- Select the file you downloaded.
- Click Upload File and Import.
- You can now create an author in WordPress with the same name as your username on Blogger. Alternatively, you can assign all imported posts to an existing user or create a new name.
- Click Submit.
Now all your blog posts from Blogger have been imported, and WordPress has downloaded and added all images.
Change permalink structure
Posts imported from Blogger to WordPress won’t always keep the same structure. This can make it harder for search engines to find your posts and may affect SEO for new posts. There are two options to resolve this. The first optimises for the future, while the second recreates Blogger’s URLs. We recommend the first option, but the second can be useful if your Blogger blog has significant search traffic.
Option 1 – Recommended method
- In WordPress, click Settings in the sidebar.
- Click Permalinks.
- Select Post Name.
- Click Save Changes.
Option 2 – For high search traffic
- In WordPress, click Settings in the toolbar on the left.
- Click Permalinks.
- Select Custom Structure.
- Enter the following code:
/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%.html |
Redirect posts from Blogger
If you have a Blogger blog with many posts receiving significant traffic from Google, it’s essential to ensure that the traffic follows your new WordPress blog.
To make this work, you need to create a redirect from your old blog to your new one. The easiest way to do this is by using a plugin called Blogger To WordPress. Here’s how to install and use it:
- In WordPress, click Plugins in the sidebar.
- Click Add New Plugin.
- Search for Blogger to WordPress.
- Click Install Now next to the plugin.
- Click Activate.
- Click Tools in the sidebar.
- Select Blogger to WordPress Redirection.
- Click Start Configuration.
- Click Get Code next to your blog name.
- Copy the code that appears in the text box.
- Log in to Blogger.
- Click Theme.
- Click the arrow to the right of Customise and select Edit HTML.
- Paste the code you copied earlier into the HTML editor.
- Click the save icon.
Now, all old blog posts will automatically redirect to your new WordPress blog. This ensures that old readers can find your new blog and that search engines understand the migration.
Optimise your blog for SEO and performance
Regardless of which blogging platform you have migrated from, it is important to ensure that your new blog is optimised for search engines and offers the highest possible performance. This improves the reading experience for your audience and can give you an advantage in important search results. There is a lot you can do to improve your SEO and speed up your WordPress website, but we’ll recommend two plugins that make it as easy as possible. These are two of the most popular plugins in their respective categories.
Optimise for search engines with Rank Math
RankMath is the most powerful tool for search engine optimisation on WordPress. When you install it, it makes a range of important changes to make your blog more attractive to search engines. Rank Math is free and still provides access to a variety of powerful features.
If you like the free version but want more, you can upgrade to Rank Math Pro to gain full insight into how you rank for important keywords, discover trends, optimise your podcast for search engines, integrate with Google Analytics 4 for advanced reports, and much more.
You can get an exclusive discount on RankMath Pro if you move your WordPress blog to one.com.
Boost your performance with WP Rocket

Recreate widgets and design
With WordPress, you can easily add all the features you had on your old blog and even introduce features your previous blogging platform lacked. In this guide, we’ll help you add engaging features to your blog, starting with widgets.
Add widgets
Exactly how you edit a WordPress blog can vary depending on the theme you’ve chosen. Here’s how widgets work with many themes:
- In WordPress: click Appearance in the sidebar.
- Click Editor.
- Click Templates.
- Now, you can choose from templates with different layouts. For example, you might select Single Post with Sidebar if you want to display blog posts with extra features alongside.
- You can edit texts and features in the sidebar.
- Click once in the sidebar to highlight it.
- Click the plus icon in the bottom right corner.
- Click Browse All to see the features you can add.
You can include a wide variety of fun and useful features. Here are some examples:
- Recent Comments
- Recent Posts
- Image Gallery
- Video
- Social Icons
- Calendar
Depending on your theme and plugins, there may be hundreds of blocks with various features to add. It’s easy to recreate all the features from your old blog and even add more.
Customise the design
If you want your new blog to look like your old one, use the features available in your theme to customise the design. The exact method may vary, but here’s a guide that works for many popular themes:
- In WordPress: click Appearance in the sidebar.
- Click Editor.
- Click Styles.
- Click Edit Styles.
- From here, you can change Typography, Colour, Background, and much more.
If you’re missing a feature or design element from your old blog, don’t worry. If the feature isn’t built into WordPress, there’s almost certainly a plugin to help you. Search for it on Google or under Add Plugins in WordPress.
Blogging for your website
Now it’s time to continue blogging on your new website! Remember, one major advantage of WordPress is that you can do much more than just blog. For example, you can combine your blog with a landing page for your new business, create an online shop, and much more. A business blog, for instance, can help you accelerate your company’s growth.
